The History of Central School of Ballet in London

The school was founded in 1982 by Ann Stannard and the late Christopher Gable CBE, who established the school’s values of artistic expression in dance, and the importance of technique. Central offers a two-year Foundation Degree in Professional Dance and Performance leading to a further year of training to complete a BA (Hons) degree, and a ballet-focused MA Choreography program, all accredited by the University of Kent.

Central is the only vocational ballet school to offer a two-year Foundation Degree in Professional Dance and Performance, leading to a further year of training to complete a BA (Hons) degree, both validated by the University of Kent.

The degree rewards the high level of training and outstanding achievements of Central's students, giving graduates a qualification that is internationally recognized and respected.

The range and quality of the courses provide thorough and professional preparation for entry into a career in professional dance. Training is provided by internationally renowned teachers who have performed with some of the world's leading dance companies.

Life in Central School of Ballet in London

Our primary school workshops are led by experienced dance education practitioners, assisted by students from the school to give all children the opportunity to explore their creativity through dance. As part of the project, the pupils are invited to present their work and attend Central's end-of-year matinee performance.

In secondary schools, Central workshops use contemporary dance as an accessible way to promote fitness and creativity amongst students. As with primary schools, these workshops are led by experienced dance education practitioners, assisted by students from the school. Following the project, schools are invited to attend our end-of-year matinee performance.

In line with the Conservatoire for Dance and Drama and its affiliates, the Central School of Ballet is committed to widening participation and encourages applications from students regardless of their background.
