The History of Singapore University of Technology and Design

The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) is the fourth autonomous university in Singapore, next to Upper Changi MRT station. The founding president is Thomas L. Magnanti, who is a Professor associated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). SUTD and Zhejiang University (ZJU) also jointly partake in research collaborations to address challenges associated with the world today, in areas such as healthcare, transportation, clean energy, and the environment.

Academic Highlights

The International Design Centre (IDC) is based both in Singapore at SUTD, and in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at MIT, with academic and industrial partners from around the world. The IDC has more than a hundred projects that involve approximately 270 faculty, researchers and students. The Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities (LKY CIC) is one of the research centers in SUTD. The SUTD–JTC Industrial Infrastructure Innovation (I3) Centre was set up to spearhead research efforts in design, architecture, engineering, and social science.

Life in Singapore University of Technology and Design

Students can join Clubs/Organizations such as Supreme Student Government, Ballroom dancing club, Bands Club, Photographic Circle, Productions Club, Sketchers Club, SUTDio Club, Chinese Culture Club, Indonesian Culture Club, Korean Language Enrichment Club, Nihongo! Club, Namaste Indian Cultural Club, Christian Fellowship, Muslim Community Interest Group, Refuge Catholic Community, etc.

School Ranking

SUTD ranked as the fifth-most influential scientific research institution in telecommunications, based on the citation impact of research papers.


SUTD practises a comprehensive review of applications, where we consider all academic and personal attributes to assess if you are able to cope with the rigour of our programme and will fit in well. Here the Minimum requirements for application: 

Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Level, Local Polytechnic Diploma, NUS High School Diploma, International Baccalaureate Diploma (Singapore), International Qualifications. 

As admission to the University is competitive, do note that satisfying the minimum requirements is often not enough to be competitive for selection. The selection will be based on merit and a comprehensive review as outlined above.
