The History of National University of Singapore

The National University of Singapore (NUS) is an autonomous research university in Singapore. Founded in 1905 as a medical college, it is the oldest institute of higher learning (IHL) in Singapore, as well as the largest university in the country in terms of student enrollment and curriculum offered. National University of Singapore (NUS) is a comprehensive research university with an entrepreneurial dimension. It offers a wide range of disciplines, including the sciences, medicine and dentistry, design and environment, law, arts and social sciences, engineering, business, computing and music in both undergraduate and postgraduate education. National University of Singapore (NUS) counts among its alumni four Prime Ministers or Presidents of Singapore and two Prime Ministers of Malaysia.

Academic Highlights

NUS is the oldest higher education institution in Singapore. It is consistently ranked within the top 100 universities in the world and the top 3 universities in the Asia-Pacific. NUS offers many programmes for student enrichment, with one of these being the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP).[15] Students are expected to spend several hours each week on their projects during the semester, and to work full-time on them during the vacation. 

Life in National University of Singapore

The university has three campuses in Singapore, including Kent Ridge, Bukit Timah, and Outram. There are 7 residence halls available for students. There are 8 libraries across all of their campuses. About 25% of the student population is made up of international students. The university also has a student center with a large gym and swimming pool for students as just another perk of attending the top ranked school in Asia.

NUS is ranked 1st in Singapore & Asia Pacific, and 22nd in the world according to the 2018 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and 11th in the world according to the 2019 QS World University Rankings. NUS was named the world's 4th most international university. In the QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2018, an annual ranking of university graduates' employability, NUS was ranked 30th in the world.

The QS World University Rankings 2019 ranked NUS 11th in the world and 1st in Asia. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018 placed NUS at 22nd in the world and 1st in Asia Pacific, while its 2018 reputation rankings placed it at 24th globally. In 2019, it ranked 27th among the universities around the world by SCImago Institutions Rankings.

Notable Alumni

The National University of Singapore has many famous alumni. In fact, four Prime Ministers or Presidents of Singapore (Goh Chok Tong, Yony Tan Keng Yam, S. R. Nathan, and Benjamin Sheares) and two Prime Ministers of Malaysia (Abdul Razak Hussein and Mahathir Mohamad) attended the university. Other prominent politicians that attended the university include Noeleen Heyzer (former United Nations Secretary General), Ng Eng Hen (current Singapore Minister for Defense), Kishore Mahbubani (former President of the United Nations Security Council), and numerous current and former members of Parliament in Singapore. Legal professional alumni include several current and former Supreme Court judges, Solicitor Generals, and Attorney Generals. Other prominent alumni include several business leaders (including Chew Choon Seng, the former Chairman of Singapore Airlines), academics (including several professors, university presidents, and deans), medical professionals (including Margaren Chan, the former Director General of the World Health Organization), and several entertainers.
