The many hostels of Singapore University of Technology and Design

Lila Sonnenschein L

You gotta love hostels: for the fraction of the rental cost, one gets to live on campus, eat cheaply and save all the time needed for commute if one stays elsewhere. The hostels of Singapore University of Technology and Design are named, rather unromantically, with numerals: Block 51, 53, 55, 57 and 59. Of these blocks, three are for students (55,57,59) and two for staff (51, 53).  The hostel blocks are also interconnected by walkways and they are also linked to the main SUTD academic cluster.

Undergraduate (freshmore) Housing

SUTD’s undergraduates who are in their freshmore year (term 1-3) are required to stay in hostel on campus. The room types that are available are:

Single/double room (Undergraduate)

Floor plan of double room

For AY2017/2018, the contract period of study is from May 2017 to April 2018, with the check-in date from 8-9 May 2017 and check-out date of 28 April 2018. The check-in and check-out dates are usually fixed although appeals may be possible by emailing to the housing office ([email protected]) at least one week in advance. Any queries about housing can also be directed to this email.

The total cost would be $4155.00 SGD inclusive of GST (tax). The payments are due typically in May ($1385), September ($1385) and January ($1385).

Undergraduate (Pillar) Housing

For undergraduates in the pillar phase (term 4 onwards ), it is no longer mandatory to stay in hostel. However, undergraduates who are still keen on staying in hostel can still apply. The room types is the same as that of Freshmores but the check-in and check-out dates are different due to the different length of stay. The check-in date is 10 September 2017 (9am – 1pm) and the check out date will be 28th April 2018 at 11am, for example.

Also due to the difference in length of stay, the costs involved are also less than that of freshmore. A double room will cost $2990 spread across 2 payments (Sep 2017 and Jan 2018, for example) and a single room will cost $3680, also spread across 2 payments. With the transition from Freshmore year into Pillar year, undergraduates have an additional room choice of en-suite, which costs $5750 for the entire length of stay.

Graduate Housing

The single occupancy rooms for Graduates, whether en-suite or non en-suite, are no different from that of the undergraduates'. However, there is another type of graduate housing called the One Bedroom unit that is designed for graduate student and spouse.

The stay period and cost are as above. Note that the payment schedule is monthly and may be different for M.Arch students and dual Masters graduate students.

Even with so many different types of costs incurred, it is still very attractive to students as it is very convenient to stay on campus.  In addition to that, you get to live in a community with like-minded people. Below are some of the communal facilities available to student/staff living on campus.

Bike parking area

Bike parking area for those who own a bike and travel frequently to nearby places such as Changi City Point. There are also many sharing bikes for rent nearby, in case you don't own one.

Laundry Area

Costs about $1 per cycle

Washbox Vending machine

Quick fix for food and drinks

Besides having a vending machine for washing and drying services, there are also vending machines for food, drinks and other services like photo printing all around the hostel blocks

Communal Kitchen

While vending machines are very convenient, too much processed and fast food are ultimately not very good for your health. Occasionally, you can make use of the communal kitchen to cook your own meals. The kitchens are equipped with induction stoves, microwaves, sinks and an eating area.
